GRP Fibreglass Flat Roofing

GRP (glass reinforced plastic) is our most popular flat roofing system for extensions and garage conversions in Godalming. Flat Roof Replacement

Our Inspection and Assessment Process

Flat roof surveys reveal what pitched roof surveys cannot — the condition of the deck beneath the waterproof membrane. We cut a test section (approximately 300mm square) of the existing covering to inspect the timber deck directly, checking for rot, delamination and structural integrity. This test cut is essential because a deck that looks sound from above can be severely compromised beneath a membrane that appears intact. If the deck is sound, we repair the test section as part of the new installation. If it reveals problems, you know before committing to the full project rather than discovering rotten timbers after the old roof has been stripped.

Materials and Specifications

We install two flat roofing systems: GRP fibreglass for areas under 30 square metres (garages, porches, small extensions) and EPDM rubber for larger areas. Both are single-ply systems that eliminate the joints and laps where traditional felt roofs fail. Our GRP specification uses Scott Bader Crystic resin with minimum 450gsm chopped strand mat, built up in controlled layers with a UV-resistant topcoat. Our EPDM specification uses Firestone RubberCover or ClassicBond membrane bonded to the deck with full contact adhesive and mechanically fixed perimeter details. Both systems carry manufacturer warranties of 20-30 years in addition to our 10-year workmanship guarantee.

After the Work Is Done

Flat roofs need less maintenance than pitched roofs but they are not maintenance-free. We provide a simple checklist for your new flat roof: quarterly debris clearing around drainage outlets, biannual visual check for surface damage or ponding, and annual professional inspection if the roof is over 10 years old. For GRP roofs, we recommend a topcoat refresh every 10-15 years to maintain UV protection and appearance. For EPDM, no surface treatment is needed — the rubber maintains its properties throughout its lifespan.
