Lead Grades and Applications

Lead sheet is manufactured in codes from 3 to 8, with the code number indicating thickness (code 3 is 1.32mm, code 8 is 3.55mm). For roofing applications, we use: code 4 (1.80mm) for flashings and soakers where the lead is backed by masonry, code 5 (2.24mm) for valley linings and chimney back gutters where the lead is unsupported, and code 6 or 7 for flat roofs where the lead forms the primary waterproof layer. Using the correct code is essential — too light and the lead cracks from thermal fatigue, too heavy and it is unnecessarily expensive and difficult to dress. Lead Sheet Association technical bulletins specify the correct code for every application, and we follow these specifications precisely.

Thermal Movement — The Hidden Challenge

Lead expands approximately 3mm per metre between winter minimum and summer maximum temperatures. Over a typical 1.5-metre bay run, this means nearly 5mm of movement that must be accommodated without restraining the lead. Restraint causes fatigue cracking — the most common mode of lead failure. We achieve this by limiting individual sheet sizes to LSA maximum recommendations, providing proper roll joints or standing seams at regular intervals, and ensuring every piece of lead can move independently. This attention to thermal design is what makes our leadwork last 60+ years while amateur installations fail in 10-15.
