How We Quote Roofing Jobs: Our Process Explained

What happens from first call to completed quote. Survey, specification, pricing — transparent from start to finish.

What Godalming Homeowners Need to Know

This guide is written specifically for properties in the Wey Valley. The general principles apply across the UK, but Godalming's damp valley climate, high proportion of period homes, Conservation Area rules and specific housing stock from Tudor to 1950s create conditions that generic guides do not address.

The Local Picture

With 20+ years of experience across Godalming, Farncombe, Busbridge, Milford, Witley and the wider Waverley borough, we have seen every roofing situation this area produces. The advice in this guide comes from hands-on experience with the specific challenges Wey Valley properties face — not from generic manufacturer literature or national statistics.

Your guarantee

Guarantee and Aftercare

All work carries our written 10-year workmanship guarantee covering everything we install, repair or replace. Material manufacturer warranties apply on top. The guarantee excludes subsequent storm or impact damage (that is insurance) and alterations by others. If a fault develops within the guarantee period, call 01483 346 855 — we inspect and fix at no cost.

We also recommend annual inspections for all properties over 20 years old. The inspection fee of £120–£250 is credited in full against any repair work booked. Many customers book on a recurring annual basis — we hold the details and schedule the visit automatically. In the Wey Valley climate, annual inspection is the most cost-effective maintenance investment a homeowner can make.

What Makes a Good Quote

A roofing quote should tell you exactly what you are getting: tile type and manufacturer, lead code and positions, mortar specification, membrane brand, scaffold arrangement and duration, waste disposal method, timeline from start to completion, payment terms, and guarantee details. If any of these are missing, you cannot compare the quote fairly against another contractor and you cannot hold the contractor to account if the specification changes during the job.

Why We Survey Before Quoting

Phone quotes and email estimates are unreliable for roofing work because every roof is different. Two houses that look identical from the street can have completely different conditions underneath — one with sound battens and another with extensive rot. The only way to provide an accurate price is to inspect in person. Our survey takes 30-60 minutes and is free. The extra time we invest in surveying means our quotes are accurate and our customers are not surprised by additional costs once work begins.

Reading a Quote — What Each Line Means

Our quotes contain specific line items that you should understand: "Strip existing covering" — removing old tiles, felt and battens. "Scaffold hire" — the hire period and arrangement (this should be a separate line, not buried in the total). "Breathable membrane" — the waterproof layer beneath the tiles (brand and type specified). "Treated battens at Xmm centres" — the timber strips that tiles sit on (grade and spacing matter). "Tile type and manufacturer" — the specific product, not just "new tiles". "Lead code X" — the thickness of lead for flashings and valleys. "Waste removal" — disposing of old materials. If any of these are missing from a quote you have received from another contractor, ask for clarification before committing.

Why the Cheapest Quote Is Usually the Most Expensive

A quote that is significantly cheaper than two others is almost always cutting specification, not finding efficiency. Common shortcuts: thinner lead (code 3 instead of code 4 — lasts half as long), lighter battens (fails under snow load), no scaffold (working unsafely from ladders at height), and no waste removal (dumped in your garden). Each of these saves the contractor £200-£500 but costs you the full replacement price when the shortcut fails within 5-10 years. The middle quote from a specified, insured, guaranteed contractor is almost always the best value over the life of the roof.

After You Receive Our Quote

Take your time. A good quote does not expire overnight — ours are valid for 30 days. Compare line-by-line with other quotes if you are getting multiple prices. Call us with any questions — we are happy to explain why we specified a particular material or why a particular cost line is necessary. If you decide to proceed, we schedule a start date and confirm the team. If you decide not to proceed, the survey and quote are yours to keep — the information may be useful for future reference or for evaluating other contractors' proposals. There is no pressure, no follow-up sales calls, and no hard feelings.
