EPDM Rubber: The Flexible Option

EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer) is a synthetic rubber membrane. It comes in large sheets that can cover an entire flat roof in a single piece, minimising joints. EPDM handles thermal movement exceptionally well, lasts 30+ years, and is the quieter option in heavy rain. It is our preferred system for larger flat roof areas.

GRP Fibreglass: The Seamless Option

GRP (glass reinforced plastic) is applied in layers to form a seamless, rigid waterproof surface. It is extremely durable, completely jointless, and can be finished with a decorative topcoat. GRP is our preferred system for smaller areas — garage roofs, porches, bay window roofs and extensions under 30 square metres.

Which Is Better for Godalming?

In the Wey Valley's damp climate, both systems outperform traditional felt by a significant margin. EPDM's flexibility makes it better for larger roofs where thermal movement is a factor. Cost Comparison

GRP typically costs 10–20% more than EPDM for the same area, but the difference narrows on smaller roofs where EPDM joint-sealing adds labour. A standard garage flat roof conversion costs £800–£1,500 in either system. Rear extensions typically cost £1,500–£4,000.

What About Felt?

We do not recommend new felt flat roofs. Felt has a 10–15 year lifespan at best, degrades in UV light, and fails prematurely in Godalming's humid conditions. If your current flat roof is felt, replacing it with GRP or EPDM is a permanent upgrade.

Installation Conditions and Weather Sensitivity

GRP resin is temperature-sensitive. It cures through a chemical reaction that slows significantly below 5°C and can fail entirely in very cold or damp conditions. If a GRP roof is damaged — by impact, scaffold pole, or falling branch — the repair is straightforward: sand the damaged area, apply new resin and mat, and topcoat. The repair bonds chemically with the existing surface, creating a permanent fix. However, the repair area will be visible as a slightly different shade until the topcoat weathers to match.

EPDM repairs use a patch of the same rubber membrane bonded over the damage with contact adhesive. This is quick, effective and invisible after weathering. For larger damage, entire sections can be replaced by welding new membrane to existing. EPDM's ability to be repaired in any weather and any temperature is a significant practical advantage over GRP.
