Why the Wey Valley Is Worse
The River Wey and its floodplains (including the Lammas Lands) create a humid microclimate that keeps ambient moisture levels consistently higher than the North Downs to the north or the Greensand hills to the south. Moss thrives in humidity. Add the heavy tree canopy across Busbridge, Frith Hill and Farncombe, and you have ideal conditions for rapid colonisation.
Which Properties Are Most Affected
North-facing roof slopes across the valley. Properties near the Lammas Lands watermeadows. Homes under heavy tree canopy in Busbridge and Frith Hill. Clay tile roofs of any era — moss roots penetrate the porous surface more aggressively than on concrete or slate.
Prevention Is Cheaper Than Cure
A biocide treatment applied to a clean roof costs £150–£250 and inhibits moss regrowth for 3–5 years. Left untreated, moss requires manual removal at £300–£600 and causes tile damage that shortens roof life by 10–15 years. The economics of prevention are overwhelming.
Zinc or Copper Strip
A strip of zinc or copper fixed along the ridge line releases trace amounts of metal ions in rainwater, inhibiting moss growth down the entire roof slope. It is a one-off installation costing £200–£400 that provides ongoing protection for 20+ years. We recommend it for every Godalming property with a history of rapid moss return.
